This week we're looking into the growing interest of the human consciousness. Up until this point in life, I never really understood the concept of 'consciousness' and never tried to dive deeper into it until now. In Jung's paper, he expresses that "to be wholly of the present means to be fully conscious of one's existence as a man" (Jung). This compelled me to search deeper and learn how to live.
In my search to understand, I was led to the Global Consciousness Project. It's a multi-national collaboration where they attempt to record all of the world's events starting from August 1998. Their reasoning for picking up this project is to demonstrate how the human consciousness can be measured through REGs, or random event generators. These REGs generate long strings of binary numbers and are used to prove that the "human consciousness can make the string of numbers non-random" only when they propose to do so (Nelson). It's been found our conscious 'link when' major regional and international events occur, causing us all to converge together and reflect.

To become conscious is to have a better understanding of yourself. There are two types of self-awarenesses, public and private. To be public is to be aware of how you present yourself to others. You conform to societal norms and behave to be socially acceptable; you're afraid to appear out of place and fall into the trap of worrying about your appearance to others. To be private is to "reflect on one's internal state... approaching [your] feelings and reactions with curiosity" (Perry). To truly live your life for yourself, you must be able to walk the line between the two, being careful not to tip into one too much.
